Our well known ELENORs Andrea Reisner and Andrea Gruber from Austria has made a significant contribution to creating an impressive new online exhibition at the Austrian National Library.
The exhibition, hosted by Ariadne (the library’s women’s and gender-specific information center), showcases “Die Blattmacherinnen” (The Paper Makers) – focusing on the groundbreaking work of female journalists in Vienna around 1900.
The exhibition highlights four remarkable women who shaped the media landscape through their publications: Marie Lang, Adelheid Popp, Hanny Brentano, and Fanny Burckhard. Each made their mark in different spheres – from the bourgeois women’s movement and social democratic press to Catholic journalism and fashion media. These pioneers not only contributed to public discourse but also opened doors for future generations of women in journalism.
What makes this exhibition particularly engaging is its blend of historical and contemporary perspectives. While featuring historical documents and photographs, it also includes modern video interviews with five current Austrian female journalists, effectively bridging past and present. The exhibition, now available on the Austrian National Library’s website, offers valuable insights into the evolution of women’s roles in journalism. https://ausstellung.onb.ac.at/online-ausstellungen/blattmacherinnen
