- The legendary first performance by the band Flying Lesbians took place 50 years ago today. The occasion was the “Rockfete im Rock” celebration for Mother’s Day 1974 in the old TU canteen in Berlin. In their three-year band history, the Flying Lesbians were to provide the soundtrack to the West German women’s movement and became internationally recognised. The band members included: Christel Wachowski, Danielle de Baat, Gigi Lansch, Monika Savier, Monika Jaeckel, Monika Mengel and Swetlana Minkow.

- The Melaten Cemetery is an open history book that makes the 19th century understanding of roles and the role of women as mourners visible. The walk leads, among other things, to Laura von Oelbermann, whose wealth was proverbial in Cologne, to the “second female museum director in Germany” and to the monastery woman who successfully marketed her famous lemon balm spirit. The cemetery’s former function as an infirmary for lepers and changes in the current burial culture are also discussed.

- Cologne women fight for democracy and women’s rights. Women have contributed a great deal to the development of democracy. Mathilde Anneke wrote a feminist pamphlet as early as 1847. The old women’s movement first demanded access to education, then the right to vote. After 1945, women’s committees were formed that once again campaigned for democracy. The New Women’s Movement fought for self-determination, the abolition of § 218 and the first municipal women’s office (1982) in the Federal Republic of Germany.

- The FrauenGenderBibliothek Saar has developed a new module for the ‘Places of Remembrance’ app. The digital tour of the new women’s movement in Saarbrücken was presented by Gesine Kleen and Dr Annette Keinhorst in the form of a short city tour on Friday, 15 November.
The app is now available online and can be downloaded from any app store.

- Das Archiv hat besondere Bedeutung dafür, wie Frauen verstanden und gearbeitet haben, um ins öffentliche Gespräch zu kommen, nachdem Frauen die Möglichkeit erhalten hatten, ins schwedische Parlament abzustimmen / abzustimmen. Die Idee einer bürgerlichen Bildung für Frauen kam direkt aus dem Wahlrechtskampf heraus und begann sich unmittelbar nach dem Sieg der Schlacht 1919 zu bilden. Initiatoren für die Schule waren Elisabeth Tamm, Elin Wägner, Kerstin Hesselgren, Ada Nilsson und Honorine Hermelin. Die Ausbildung stand Frauen aus allen Lebensklassen offen und 1922 fand ein erster Kurs statt, danach wurden regelmäßig 1925-1954 Kurse abgehalten. 2025 wird das 100-jährige Schuljubiläum gefeiert.

- The central task of our libraries, archives and information centres is the preservation of cultural heritage, which for us means: feminist knowledge and materials from lesbian/women’s movements from the past and present for the future. This means that our institutions work to eliminate the global and national inequalities in knowledge systems that still exist. That is why our biggest political challenge is the anti-feminism, misogyny and attempted dismantling of achieved standards for equality between women and men and the rights of all genders that have been observed for some time in several European countries. - Conference in Iceland! I (Research Coordinator Rachel) have spent half a day with Rakel, the archivist at KvinnSam’s Icelandic counterpart Kvennasögusafn. Our two organisations represent the only two women’s history archive collections in the entire Nordic region! Rakel showed some reprints based in the collections (picture 1) and I got a tour of the whole building and the archive collections (including an LP disc from the 1970s feminist movement, see picture 2). What fun!There is a long history of collaboration between our two organisations, which Linda & Sanna of KvinnSam describe in their chapter in the anthology ‘Object and Collection’ (see a copy given to Rakel – on the shelf in picture 3!) Rakel and I (picture 4) will continue this fun and necessary co-operation!

The day of action aims to raise awareness of the specific challenges faced by girls and promote their emancipation, particularly in education and training. 12 years later, equality for girls and women in the education sector has still not been achieved. Education as a central means of self-liberation, empowerment and self-realisation is a fundamental democratic right that must not be made more difficult or denied to girls.

An der Diskussion werden die beiden Herausgeberinnen Judith Götz und Stefanie Mayer teilnehmen sowie die Autor_innen Katharina Wiedlack und Iain Zabolotny, die über den Backlash gegen feministischen body-positiven Aktivismus in Russland, Kirgistan und Kasachstan sprechen werden. Moderiert wird die Veranstaltung von Ayşe Dursun.
Katharina Wiedlack ist Assistenzprofessorin für Anglophone Cultural Studies an der Universität Wien.

We also visited several NGOs based in Prague. The intensive exchange of experiences and opinions will be a source of great inspiration for us for months to come. - Queeres Leben gab (und gibt) es überall – auch in Dörfern, Kleinstädten und mittelgroßen Kommunen. In der Forschung zum Deutschen Kaiserreich und der Weimarer Republik findet die queere Geschichte der sogenannten Ostgebiete des Deutschen Reichs wie Schlesien, Pommern und Ostpreußen jedoch kaum Beachtung. In seinem Vortrag wird der polnische Historiker Mathias Foit nicht nur seine wichtigsten Erkenntnisse in Bezug auf lesbische und trans* Geschichte aus diesen Regionen darstellen, sondern auch mit den gängigen Vorstellungen von urbaner Freiheit und ländlicher Repression sowie den Mythen, die sich um Queerness in den vermeintlich „goldenen“ zwanziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts ranken, aufräumen. Erzählt wird u. a. von einem lesbischen Theaterstück aus Breslau, dem Massagesalon als lesbischen Raum, der Bedeutung vom ländlichen Raum für trans* Menschen sowie diversen Einschränkungen für Frauen und trans* Menschen, was den Zugang zur großstädtischen queeren Kultur anbelangt.

- Dès le 24 avril 2024, le CIVA présente la première exposition monographique consacrée à la vie, à l’œuvre et à l’héritage de l’architecte belge d’origine chinoise Simone Guillissen-Hoa (1916-1996). Promotrice de l’architecture moderniste, elle a été l’une des premières femmes à créer son propre bureau d’architecture en Belgique. Sa carrière et sa vie personnelle ont constamment défié les limites et les conventions liées au genre, aux origines et à la religion.Le vernissage de l’exposition a lieu ce mardi 23 avril 2024 à 19h.

In the workshop, we will approach this open process in three steps: first, we will loosen up the hand and the mind with automatic writing methods, so-called free writing. In the second part, we will look at the characteristics of informal art and ask: How could we write informally? Finally, we will devote an extended writing time to composing informal texts and give expression to the images in the exhibition in unexpected linguistic forms.

- The content and timing of the comic workshop is based on the International Day against Homophobia, Bisexuality, Transphobia and A* Hostility (IDAHOBITA). This day occurs worldwide on May 17th.
The workshop offers those interested the opportunity to use the weekend before to creatively engage with queer topics. Under the guidance of Elizabeth Pich, the group of participants will deal with LGBTIQA topics under the title “Com(ic)unity”, come up with storylines and design them graphically.

The @oesterreichischer_frauenring has interviewed the leading candidates for the National Council elections on 29 September 2024. As the umbrella organisation of women’s organisations and women’s initiatives, the Austrian Women’s Ring indirectly represents the interests of over one million women.
In the post, you can see the answers to the question: 50 years after the introduction of the abortion solution, this achievement of women’s rights is once again up for discussion. Still there is still no nationwide, free and legal access in public hospitals. The abortion solution is still not exempt from punishment. France in particular has set a pioneering example by enshrining abortion in the constitution. What will you do to extend women’s right to self-determination and, above all, to protect it from further attacks?

Claire von Glümer, who was born in Blankenburg in 1825, wrote about her childhood in her book ‘ Aus einem Flüchtlingsleben’ (1904). In it, she tells of the family’s constant relocations because her liberal father was politically persecuted. After her mother’s death, she returned to Germany, where she initially lived with her grandfather.
